Split's old town charmed us more than expected as a stopover between Zadar and Dubrovnik, though the crowds in Dubrovnik's Old Town during peak afternoon hours were intense, definitely a destination best explored early morning.
Dubrovnik in August is genuinely overwhelming with cruise ship crowds, could barely move along the main street some afternoons. Zadar and Split were far calmer and more enjoyable for a romantic trip, wish the itinerary leaned more that direction.
