Colosseum in Rome is as awe inspiring as everyone says it is. It does get quite crowded by midday though and we wished our entry slot had been earlier.
Wonderful sights, shame the Rome hotel did not match the quality of the earlier stops.
Rome leg had us in a fairly tired looking hotel room for what we had paid, and checkin dragged on for almost forty five minutes while we stood there with our bags. Venice and Florence more than made up for it though, especially the gondola ride and the Uffizi. Just wish the Rome hotel had matched the quality of the earlier stops. Would ask for a room check in advance next time.
St Mark's Square lit up at night was our first stop in Italy and set an impossible bar.
Venice, Florence, and Rome in five nights sounds rushed on paper but this itinerary paces it out beautifully. Each city got its own distinct romantic mood, Venice quiet and dreamlike, Florence artistic and slow, Rome grand and a little chaotic. Gondola rides, Renaissance art, and ancient ruins all in one trip felt like genuinely good value. Would recommend this exact route to any couple planning their first Italy trip.
