Crowds at Tanah Lot during sunset were honestly a lot, hard to get a clean photo or even a quiet moment with so many tour buses arriving at once. Kuta beach itself in the mornings was peaceful though, so the balance was decent overall.
Reflecting back on this trip a few months later, it remains one of my favourite solo decisions this year. Kuta gave me exactly the mix of energy and quiet I needed, busy enough in the day to never feel lonely, calm enough at sunset to actually think. Tanah Lot was the emotional high point, standing there as the waves hit the rocks below the temple. Only wish the second day had one more activity built in since I ended up just repeating the beach walk from day one.
Tanah Lot at sunset watching waves crash against the rocks gave me chills travelling completely alone.
As a first solo international trip this could not have been more welcoming. Locals were friendly, the temple visit felt genuinely spiritual rather than touristy, and I never once felt unsafe walking around in the evenings.
Went in nervous about my first solo international trip, but Kuta made it painless. Sitting alone on the beach the first evening with no agenda set the tone, and by the final morning walk I genuinely didn't want to check out.
Kuta itself was peaceful in the mornings, but Tanah Lot at sunset was heaving with tour buses and I struggled to find a quiet moment or a clean photo. Still glad I went, just don't expect solitude there.
May to September, when Bali's dry season offers ideal weather for beach days and temple visits.
