Split felt more relaxed than Dubrovnik, less crowded and easier with kids in tow. Only downside was the transfer between the two cities, which felt long with two restless children in the back seat.
Split's old town charmed the whole family more than Dubrovnik honestly, less touristy and the little ice cream shops near the palace were a big hit with the kids.
Out on the boat to the Elafiti Islands the kids jumped in every few minutes, the sea so clear you could count pebbles on the bottom.
Diocletian's Palace in Split genuinely surprised all of us. We didn't expect an entire living city built inside an old Roman palace, shops and cafes tucked into ancient walls. My in-laws, who usually get bored on heritage walks, were completely absorbed for two hours straight. Definitely the sleeper highlight of the trip.
Took our two kids to Croatia and the City Walls sunrise walk in Dubrovnik alone was worth the trip.
