One evening near Plaka a shopkeeper practically pulled my daughter in to try on jewellery and then guilt tripped us into buying something we did not want, left a slightly sour note on an otherwise good trip. Everything else, the Acropolis, the stadium, the food, was genuinely wonderful for the family.
A short but rich trip for the whole family, ancient history mixed nicely with enough downtime that our two boys never got bored. Athens surprised us with how walkable everything felt even with little ones in tow.
Climbing up to the Acropolis with our two little ones, watching them try to work out how anyone stacked those columns without cranes, was the highlight of our year. Athens turned out to be surprisingly easy to walk with kids in tow.
Acropolis visit around noon was brutally hot for the kids, would recommend an early morning slot if travelling with children.
Bringing the kids up to the Acropolis and watching their faces when the Parthenon came into full view is a memory I will keep forever, my son kept asking how old people built something so massive without machines. The Panathenaic Stadium visit right after had both children sprinting the length of the track pretending to be Olympic runners, easily the most energetic they were the entire trip. Three nights in Athens gave us just enough time to see the essentials without rushing the kids too much.
Queue to enter the Acropolis site was longer than we planned for and standing in the sun with tired kids tested everyone's patience, get tickets online in advance if you can.
