Nothing beats Trastevere by night for pure romance, full stop.
Da Vinci's Last Supper needs advance booking and ours was arranged without any last minute stress, which we appreciated given how limited the slots are. The fresco itself is smaller than photos suggest but far more moving in person. Milan's Duomo rooftop right after was a nice contrast, all light and open sky.
Trastevere in the evening was exactly the romantic wandering we had hoped for, narrow lanes and good wine everywhere. Vatican Museums queue moved faster than we feared thanks to the early slot we booked. Milan felt a bit rushed given how much time Rome deserved, three nights split between two cities is tight.
Vatican Museums took our breath away, we budgeted two hours and ended up spending nearly four just standing in front of ceiling after ceiling. Colosseum the next morning felt surreal walking through arches that old. Milan's Duomo rooftop on the last day gave us a completely different, modern side of Italy to end the trip on.
Comfortable shoes are a must for the Vatican Museums walk to the Sistine Chapel, it is longer than people mention. Colosseum tour guide made the history genuinely engaging for two people who know very little about ancient Rome. Milan leg felt like an afterthought in comparison, though the Duomo view was lovely.
Duomo rooftop views in Milan were the surprise highlight over even the Colosseum for us.
