The fjord cruise the next day slowed everyone down in the best way, gliding past little painted cabins and islands with nothing to do but relax, which our usually restless son actually loved. Oslo turned out to be far more family friendly than we expected going in.
A short, sweet first taste of Norway for the whole family. Akershus Castle gave the grown-ups their history and the kids the boats to watch, and the changing of the guard was the surprise hit, all uniforms and marching that kept our two transfixed.
Fun for the children, but a rushed, rainy morning meant our fjord cruise was cut short and they were plainly disappointed.
Everything with the children went smoothly bar one scheduling headache, our fjord cruise slot was cancelled for weather and the replacement time clashed with the changing of the guard, so we had to choose and ended up missing the ceremony. One frustrating trade-off in an otherwise lovely three days.
