Thirteen nights split between just Madrid and Barcelona meant we never felt rushed. Could linger over long lunches and evening walks as a couple.
Every bit of hype around Sagrada Familia is deserved. We went early morning and had almost half an hour with barely any crowd around us. The scale of it up close is hard to describe in words. Worth rearranging the whole day around getting there first thing.
Barcelona was flawless, Montserrat especially. The one sour note was our Madrid hotel taking almost two hours to check us in, a rough start when you're jet lagged and just want to drop the bags.
The flamenco in Madrid still gives me goosebumps to think about, and Sagrada Familia lived up to every bit of its reputation. Having the days to visit it early and come back later again was a luxury we didn't take for granted.
Opulence of the Royal Palace combined with that evening's flamenco show made Madrid feel like the perfect opening chapter to this anniversary trip.
Barcelona portion was wonderful but our Madrid hotel check-in took nearly two hours with no clear explanation. Rough start to what was otherwise a lovely luxury trip.
