Clouds rolled in on our Gornergrat morning so the promised Matterhorn panorama was mostly mist, which was disappointing given how much the itinerary builds it up. The hotel in Zurich on the last two nights also felt tired compared to Lucerne and Zermatt. Titlis and Jungfraujoch were the real highlights that saved the trip for us.
Booked this for my in-laws' fortieth anniversary along with our two teenagers and it delivered on every front. The Ice Palace inside Jungfraujoch left the kids wide eyed, Zermatt's alpine charm won over my mother-in-law completely, and Zurich gave us a gentle, cultured finish to the holiday.
Interlaken to Zermatt by train was scenic beyond words but quite long with two young kids getting restless midway. Once we arrived though, the Matterhorn view from our first evening walk made it all worthwhile, and Titlis the next day was pure magic for them.
The last two nights in Zurich in a tired hotel were a slight letdown after Zermatt, and by then all the train hopping had worn everyone a little thin. Still, seeing snow with my children in July on Titlis is something I will never regret paying for.
Our kids are still talking about the rotating gondola up Mount Titlis months later. Lucerne to Zurich felt seamless, and the boat ride on Lake Zurich before shopping on Bahnhofstrasse was the perfect calm ending to an action packed itinerary.
Gornergrat at sunrise with the Matterhorn right in front of us is a memory I will keep forever, though I wish the itinerary had built in a bit more rest between the mountain excursions for the grandparents travelling with us.
